Help! I'm Stuck!

Its the start of a new year and the start of a new hitch back in Abu Dhabi for me. I arrived very late at night on the 15th and left to the rig early on the 16th so have not even been able to say hello to anybody in town. Compounding my feeling of isolation is the fact that I am the only D&M Slb Engineer on the rig. Its pretty difficult to switch from being around girlfriend, friends and others to suddenly being on your own and I have to say the feeling is wearing thin.

Due to this I have been looking for jobs and have recently been invited to attend assessment centers for two companies. The issue is that I am always in Abu Dhabi and, if im honest do not want to be using my vacation to go to job interviews. Unfortunately the companies refuse to consider you without seeing you in person and interacting with the other candidates. Also they will not cover expenses from Abu Dhabi as far as I have been told. This means that I have to pay to go to an interview to jobs where I am very unaware of what the job entails. I already have a job that pays well and has good prospects so there is a large chance that I may decide to stay rather than change, it completely depends on what is on offer but I do not feel as desperate as I did as a student. So what can I do? Im not blissfully happy in my work but it seems that I cannot change without doing something fairly drastic...

I find it amazing how difficult it is to get jobs these days (I also find it amazing that companies are not able to at least discuss positions on the phone!). What are students and prospective employees going to have to face in a few years? Week long assessment centers with hours of aptitude tests, fitness tests and medical examinations? If I had been told as a kid that companies would be asking for my GCSE results even though I have a degree I would have probably laughed at them. What more will they want to separate the wheat from the chaff, primary school grades? And how can every company be looking for the top 2%? This means only a few dozen people are employable - what are the rest of us supposed to do? Are we really that useless? Perhaps this is further evidence that this world cannot support 7 billion people.
